Del McCoury Band

Performs Woody Guthrie

Led by the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Famer, 2014 Grammy Winner for Best Bluegrass Album and 2011 National Endowment for the Arts Lifetime Achievement winner, the Del McCoury Band presents a unique concert featuring new songs of completely unheard lyrics from America’s folk poet, Woody Guthrie.

Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, hand-selected thirty songs from over 3,000 in the Woody Guthrie archives to present to McCoury with the task of setting them to music. “I was able to give Del ten lyrics off the top and he could write music to them in three days…He would just go into the studio and just play it,” explains Nora Guthrie. “That’s why I wanted to do Del because he is kind of the last stake in the ground to really say this is our music…He has it in his rhythm and it’s in everything he does…” These skillfully arranged new Guthrie lyrics are supported and given context by the presentation of historical audio and video footage throughout the concert. “My father’s earliest musical influences were the string bands of North Texas in the late ‘30s and early ‘40s…If he were making music today, it would sound like the Del McCoury Band.”
